"If it's so bad, why do people sell Black Henna Tattoos?"

One word: Money. A single box of say, "Black Rose Hair Dye" or "Bigen Hair Dye" that can be purchased for about $5 can make a Black Henna vendor from $500 to $1,000. These people usually set up shop in tourist areas where their customers won't be coming back. And in many countries, including the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, using hair dye for cosmetic purposes is against the law. Sadly though, in many other countries, its use is not regulated, and can be particularly dangerous if the proper medical attention is not available following a serious physical reaction.

"Why is black hair dye so bad?"

The chemical that's so potentially dangerous is called Paraphenylenediamene, also known as PPD. If you've ever dyed your hair with a commercial dying product, chances are you've used a product that contains PPD. You know the gloves you get in a box of hair coloring? They are used to protect your skin. This is why the directions say not get get any of the coloring on your scalp or to let it get in contact with your skin. If you do, you're supposed to wash it off immediately. If you've ever had an allergic reaction, burning, a scar or other skin problem after using a hair coloring product, or know someone who has, PPD was probably the culprit.
